Breaking Olds: College Kids Act Like College Kids
I’m not going to lie, I’m sick of seeing people blame college kids for the pandemic. Back in March, it was their fault for going on spring break. Then in the fall it was their fault for not staying locked up in their dorms. Now, the New York Times has a page dedicated to tracking COIVD outbreaks at Universities.
Here’s the deal: this pandemic wasn’t caused by college kids. Maybe they aren’t being as responsible as they should, but how long can we expect them to put everything on hold during one of the most transformative and exciting times in their lives, especially given that they aren’t at great personal risk and there’s no sign of things getting better because the government has done nothing to mitigate the virus’s spread? At some point, you have to start deciding what risks are worth it to get back to something resembling normal, and college kids simply had the least to lose when our national patience began to wear down and were therefore the first to start making those risk assessments.
If you want to blame this shit on one group, blame it on Donald Trump and his crooks who were supposed to be running this country. Blame it on stupid Christians who go to church and refuse to wear masks and ignore science even though they’re more susceptible and should know better. Don’t blame it on kids because they’re acting like kids are supposed to act.
