Apple Event, October 2020: Pre-Event Musings

My last round of predictions and gut feelings was astoundingly incorrect, but there are a few things that have been on my mind leading up to this event, so here they are.

Obviously, we’re going to get iPhones. 5G seems inevitable. The rumors are suggesting there’ll be four new models this year, which in my opinion is too many. The rumors are also suggesting that between the two pro models (both of which are rumored to be getting bigger, which sucks), the Pro Max is going to get better camera improvements than the Pro (non-max), which really blows. I’m not a huge fan of massive phones, but I am a huge fan of great cameras, and with four new models, and that doesn’t seem like a compromise I should be forced to make.

AirTags seem to have been shelved yet again, but the HomePod mini rumors have been swirling up. I don’t know how excited I am about a smaller HomePod. The HomePod has always focused on quality sound over it’s smart capabilities, and frankly that’s been a good play because Siri is quite a disappointment these days. I don’t see why they would introduce a smaller, cheaper HomePod that ultimately will not sound as good (and again, sound quality is the only area the HomePod has excelled in), unless they’ve got some serious Siri improvements up their sleeve as well. But my god, don’t count those chickens yet.

It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see Apple Silicon at this event, but that would be a nice surprise. I can’t wait to see what they’re capable of doing in that arena.
